The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed Nigeria’s Presidential Election which was originally scheduled to come off today, February 16, 2018.
Few hours to polls, INEC announced the postponement stating that going ahead with the elections is not feasible, hence, the elections cannot hold as planned.
The Commission noted in a press release that there was a meeting a day to the election in which the decision was taken.
“Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct a free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the election as scheduled in no longer feasible.”
The election is therefore scheduled to take place next Saturday, February 23, 2019.
According to INEC, the Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territorial Area Council Elections will also come off on Saturday, the 9th of March, 2019.
INEC stated that although postponing the election was a hard decision to come by, it has become necessary to preserve the democracy of Nigeria by ensuring that a free, fair and credible election is held.
The Commission stated that it will meet all key stakeholders in the election and plan the way forward.
The Nigerian election has over 70 candidates contesting for the presidency with incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and opposition PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar being the front runners.
