The vigilance of a group of young men including some taxi drivers has led to the arrest of a 26-year-old youngman, who allegedly killed a taxi driver at Swedru and bolted with his car.
The suspect, Isaac Mensah, popularly known as Agyabu, is currently in the custody of the Takoradi Market Circle Police.
An Assembly member who aided the arrest of the suspect tells host of Connect FM‘s OMANBAPA morning show, Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, that the suspect was spotted by a group of taxi drivers who operate around Asempa Hotel in Takoradi.
They spotted him hours after hearing the murder of the taxi driver at Agona Swedru in a news bulletin on Sunday.
The drivers’ suspicion, according to Amanful East Assmebly member Prince Arthur, was heightened when they realised the registration number of the car the suspect was driving was the same as the one announced in the news bulletin earlier in the afternoon with traces of blood on the seats.
“They started trailing the taxi but the suspect with another accomplice became alarmed and started to speed off,” Arthur explained.
According to him, when they pursued the taxi to Top 10, a vicinity in Takoradi, the two suspects abandoned the car and took to their heels but luck eluded Isaac, who had headed to Amanful, also a surburb of Takoradi.
In an attempt to come out of his hideout around 2:30am to seek refuge, Isaac was arrested by the Assembly man with assistance from the community watchdog members and handed over to the Market Circle Police Monday dawn.
A manhunt has since been launched for the arrest of the second suspect while the stolen taxi, a Hyundai i10 with registration number GW 9717-18, has been impounded and parked at the Central Police Station in Takoradi.
