The East Gonja Municipal Assembly in the Savanna Region has presented 580 dual desks to the Municipal Education Directorate.
The gesture, according to the assembly, is expected to deal with the furniture deficits in the schools across the municipality.
About 60 percent of the total 150 basic schools in the municipality lacked furniture, necessitating the action by the Assembly.
Inadequate infrastructure and furniture, insufficient teachers, poor road network are some of the challenges facing the department of education in the municipality.
The assembly in a bid to address these challenges, has provided various units of classroom blocks, furniture among others to some schools in the municipality.
One of such recent interventions is the presentation of 580 dual desks to the education directorate to address the inadequate furniture situation in the municipality.
Presenting the furniture to the Municipal Education Director in Salaga, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mohammed Tamimu, said the gesture forms part of efforts by the assembly to deal with the furniture deficit in classrooms across the municipality.
He said seeing how pupils struggled to sit and write during a visit prompted the assembly to undertake the initiative.
He said the assembly between 2018 and 2019 has presented a total of 1,380 dual desk to the education directorate.
Mr Tamimu assured the directorate that the assembly is working on 1,200 more desks.
This, he said, will help solve the furniture problem.
“We are aware we have furniture deficit in the municipality, at the moment we can’t solve all but we will do our best,” he noted.
Mr. Tamimu charged the education directorate to ensure the schools with more pressing need for furniture would be served first.
He indicated that the government is committed to improving education in the country through the provision of basic educational facilities.
“Education is key to this government and we will go at length to provide the basic infrastructure that will make the children comfortable in class”
Receiving the items, the municipal director of education Mohammed Abu Baba thanked the MCE and the assembly for the gesture.
He indicated, the gesture will go a long way to curtail several unanticipated postural defects that children get as a result of lying on the floor.
In a related development, the Assembly has presented 120 ruminants costing 42,000 to 63 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the Municipality.
The gesture is expected to alleviate the sufferings of PWDs in the area.
