The 6th edition of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Golf Tournament slated from 4th – 7th December at the Damang Golf Course in the Western Region, has been launched.
At stake is a whopping 40,000 cedis for the overall winner in the Professionals (Pros) division.
The tournament, which is expected to draw PRO Golfers from Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’ivoire, Togo, Zimbabwe, Senegal and Gabon, would also have 9,000 cedis as prize money for the seniors division.
President of PGA, Mr Tony Mintah, said the four-day tournament will be much better and an improvement on the previous year’s.
“This year’s edition would be much keener and competitive than the previous years as we are going to have fourteen (14) PRO’s from six other African countries competing for honours with sixty-four (64) from Ghana.
“It has always been our vision and mission to do better than we have done and the prize money for this year, says it all with an increase of 5000 cedis from last year.
“This our flagship tournament at Damang is where we showcase the best of Golf from some of the best Golfers in Ghana and around Africa, so we always build on it from the previous year and we offer the biggest platform for Golf players and lovers to meet, interact, play and build ideas for the future” he added.
Mr. Alfred Baku, Executive Vice President for Gold Fields Limited said Gold Fields being a headline sponsor had always been proud and happy to be associated to such a great tournament over the years.
“We are immensely happy and proud of what the PGA is doing and we are happy to see great Golf players and over’s gather to climax the Golf calendar”.
According to him, the 6th edition promises to be one of the biggest in the Golfing calendar as the vision of the tournament was being achieved.
“We had a vision to see our Golfers exhibit some level of discipline and professionalism and we have seen that.
“The second is the standard of Golf in Ghana, which has been marvellous and it is our aim to do even more to sustain the sport, which has come to stay for good”.
For the second time in a row, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, an ardent golfer himself, will grace the occasion joined by other dignitaries including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gold Fields Ghana Nick Holla
