Road Safety Authority to fully implement towing vehicle policy next year
The National Road Safety Authority says it will get the towing vehicles project running next year. Consultation is underway with relevant stakeholders to get the policy back.
Parliament In 2012, passed L.I. 2180. Regulation 102 (3) of L.I. 2180 imposes a mandatory levy on all owners and persons in charge of motor vehicles for the purpose of towing break-down or disabled vehicles from the roads.
The National Road Safety Authority, which planned to implement the law in July 2017 was however forced to put the policy on hold after it came under stiff opposition from both commercial transport owners and private car owners. Government subsequently promised to review the law.
But speaking on the 3FM Sunrise Morning Show with sit- in- Host Helen Appiah Ampofo, the Director of Monitoring and Programmes at the National Road Safety Authority, David Osafo Adonteng lamented over the rate at which abandoned broken down vehicles on these highways are killing people.
“People are still leaving abandoned vehicles on the highways without putting signal there. In this modern day and age people put leaves behind the car as road sign. We have not been able to implement that full time mechanism about the towing of these vehicles but we are looking at that next year. It is something we need to work on next year. We are working with the stakeholders to bring this project back in 2021”.
He also said the stakeholders must get involved in a manner that the policy makers or new government will take it up as a very crucial for road safety management in Ghana”.
Meanwhile, Mr. Adonteng said the issue of Ghana now dualising the highways must be a top priority to government.
“Our roads the vehicle population is growing but the road size is the same and I think that we should dualise the major highways so the kind of head on crashes that we are experiencing must be a thing of the past”.
From January to November, the country recorded some 2,310 deaths.
