The Supreme Court has adjourned the 2020 Presidential Election Petition hearing currently ongoing to Wednesday, January 20. Day three (3) of the hearing is expected to commence at 9:30 am.
Court on break
The Supreme Court is currently on break to decide on some preliminary issues parties to the 2020 Presidential Election Petition have argued over in the pre-trial which commenced earlier.
Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 Presidential Election, John Dramani Mahama sued the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) as 1st Respondent and President Akufo-Addo as 2nd Respondent in what has become the 2020 Presidential Election Petition which is being heard by the Supreme Court.
Today marks Day 2 of the hearing as the case was adjourned last Thursday January 14.
At the last hearing, lawyers for the petitioner John Mahama moved a motion to amend parts of the petition which erroneously captured the “2nd Respondent” as the “1st Respondent” in one of the reliefs where the petitioner sought a rerun of the presidential elections.
The motion was granted after an initial objection by counsels for the 1st and 2nd Respondents. Lawyer for the 2nd Respondent Akufo-Addo argued that the petitioner should have known “we all make mistakes and that is why we believe that the petitioner should have been more kind of the innocuous errors made by the 1st Respondents”.

A motion by the petitioner for a live broadcast of the hearing was struck out as moot because the judicial service had already taken an administrative decision to do so.

Ahead of today’s hearing, the petitioner filed another motion for the 1st Respondent Electoral Commission to admit that they made errors in the declaration of the 2020 Presidential Election.
