The Ghana Police Service has said that it is on the verge of identifying the person involved in a shooting incident in the Agona West Constituency on October 27.
This is contained in a press release dated October 28.
“The Police have been actively working on the case throughout Sunday night when the incident happened and are closing in on the perpetrator to get him arrested to face justice,” the Police disclosed.
Four individuals sustained injuries during the incident, with two treated and discharged, while the remaining two are still on admission receiving medical care.
Background
It is recalled that some confusion ensued between the supporters of Independent Candidate Cynthia Morrison and the New Patriotic Party’s candidate for the Agona West Constituency Chris Arthur on Sunday evening which led to one person sustaining a gunshot injury.
There has been growing tension between the two candidates and their supporters since the incumbent MP, Cynthia Morrison decided to go independent after losing the party’s primary. Not only has her decision created a situation at the Constituency but has also generated another controversy in Parliament.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on 17 October, 2024 declared four parliamentary seats vacant because the current occupants had defected from the political parties on whose ticket they entered the parliament to contest on different tickets.
The affected MPs included; Agona West Member of Parliament (MP), Cynthia Morrison of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); Amenfi Central MP, Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Suhum MP, Kwadwo Asante of the NPP, and Fomena MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, an independent MP.
This ruling by the Speaker automatically transformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from a Minority to Majority group because 2 of the said seats belonged to the NPP, 1 for NDC and 1 independent. Both NPP and NDC had 137 seats each out of the 275 seats but NPP assumed the Majority group because the Independent MP decided to do business with them which gave the NPP a plus one over the NDC.
However, in less than 24 hours later, a Supreme Court ruling on the 18th October, 2024 overturned the Speaker’s decision, thereby heightening the tension amongst the two sides which eventually led to an indefinite adjournment of Parliament by the Speaker on Tuesday 22 October, 2024.
The NPP Constituency chairman at Agona West, Gibril Tanko has also accused the Cynthia Morrison camp of an alleged assassination attempt on Christ Arthur, the NPP Parliamentary candidate.
The police have assured the public that the matter is under investigation but have remained tight-lipped on any findings.
