Mfantsipim school ‘miraculously’ won its third National Science and Maths Quiz trophy in the 2024 NSMQ finals.
BOTWE as they are affectionately called, surprised audience in the final and fifth round of the contest when they answered the last but one riddle question to take a point lead ahead of St. Augustine’s College.
Up until the fifth round, AUGUSCO was leading by a point but failed to maintain their blazing effort to win the contest after submitting to Mfantsipim in the final round.
At the end of the contest, Mfantsipim secured 47 points while St. Augustine’s College had 46 points followed by Keta SHS with 32 points.
BOTWE, in addition to the trophy was awarded GHC10,000 for scoring the highest point of the day sponsored by Pepsodent.
Mfantsipim first won the contest in 1999 and won their second trophy in 2014. BOTWE has placed second in two contests in 2000 and 2016. The school has been to five finals since the NSMQ started.
St. Augustine’s was hoping to win their third trophy after they first won the contest in 2007 and the second in 2019.
KETASCO, the reigning champions of the Volta-Oti Zonal championship are two-time NSMQ finalist and were in the semi-finals in 2019,2020, 2021 and 2023.
However, the ‘Dzo Lalians’ could not match up the heat from BOTWE and AUGUSCO in the finals but managed to come catch up a bit in the fifth round when they answered two riddle questions, increasing their points from 27 to 32 points.
