A Nigerian man based in the UK has withdrawn his marriage proposal to a Nigerian lady after the woman’s family provided him with a costly and demanding traditional bride price list.
Princess Adeola, a social media user, posted the story and shared images of the bride price list on her X handle.
Adeola had created a WhatsApp channel meant to connect singles and help them find love. This was the platform that helped the UK-based Nigerian to meet her lover.
The bride price list which was supposed to purposely honour the bride’s family, featured a variety of goods amounting to N3.5 million, including apparel, drinks, animals, and cash presents for extended family.
The list also included N15,000 for family youth, N5000 for village youth, N20,000 for grandparent, N20,000 for stepfathers and others.
Princess Adeola who shared the story on X said the man was deeply committed to the woman and willing to take her abroad and fund her education.
However, he has truncated his plan and no longer interested in the marriage. He was also heartbroken to see the lady support her family’s demands, citing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Princess Adeola wrote, “There’s this guy on my platform who met a lady here in Nigeria while he’s in the UK. Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, he was committed to her.”
“He even sought my advice, and I encouraged him to go for it. But yesterday, he reached out to me, distraught, after receiving a bride price list from her family totaling N3.5 million.”
“We had a lengthy and emotional discussion. His pain wasn’t just the list itself but the fact that the woman he loves supports her family’s demands, claiming everything is expensive in Nigeria.”
“Why should anyone demand such an outrageous amount just for marriage? Doesn’t that set the tone for the man to treat her like he ‘bought’ her? It’s a shame, and I hope women learn from this. This man had genuine plans to take her abroad and pay for her education. Now, because of greed, the family has lost a good man.”
“He told me yesterday he’s no longer interested and plans to block her. He said he would cry, heal, and move on with his life. I feel bad for the lady—if only she had a more understanding family and stood up for herself. She’s about to lose a good man without even knowing it.”
The story has sparked discussions about cultural customs that could sway away potential suitors.
We spoke at length and it was not a palatable discussion, I tried to calm him down but his pain was that the woman he wants to marry is also in support of her people saying things are very expensive in Nigeria pic.twitter.com/llUpeW973r
