A member of Occupy Ghana, Mr. Kweku Segbefia is calling for an independent investigations into the bribery allegation involving the minister for Energy Hon. Boakye Agyarko and some members of the appointment committee of Parliament.
In his opinion, the allegations bother on criminality and should be handed over to the police CID to probe.
According to him, there have been instances in the past where prominent people in society like Hon. Alban Bagbin, former Majority leader of parliament, Prof. Stephen Adei, lecturer Ashesi University and Martin Amidu, former Attorney General have labelled Parliament as corrupt.
This according to him means the legislature can be bought.
“Parliament should not investigate itself because the members are in bed with each other.
No MP would want to tarnish the image of Parliament by exposing another member,” Segbefia stated Tuesday night on the ‘State of Affairs’ show hosted by Nana Aba Anamoah on GHOne TV.
But the former MP for Akwatia, Hon. Baba Jamal refuted Segbefia’s claims and said it is about time Parliament made its procedures known to the public.
He described the call for independent investigationS as against Parliamentary rules.
Hon. Jamal implored Ghanaians to allow parliament to exhaust its internal structures before they demand for an independent enquiry.
He also asked that people dispel the opinion that Parliamentarians lack credibility.
“If Parliamentarians can come public with allegations, why then would they hide the truth? He questioned.
Meanwhile Segbefia insists, the allegations have left many Ghanaians with doubts.
“We don’t know who to trust, whether to trust that Boakye Agyarko didn’t pay the monies or Mahama Ayariga is lying. There is no trust even among the three arms of government other that the judiciary could just investigate this matter,” Segbefia stated.
He urged Parliament not to be afraid of an independent enquiry.
