The Turkish Embassy in Ghana is set to commemorate patriots who lost their lives on the night of July 15, 2016 in a failed coup attempt by a group of military men in Turkey’s army.
It took the bravery of government and civilian action to thwart the coup attempt in a couple of hours on the night, but unfortunately 251 lives were lost and more than 2,000 people sustained different degrees of injury.
Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Ozlem Ergun Ulueren, stated that July 15, 2016 was a trial of strength and perseverance for the Turkish democracy and state, but it makes them proud to have passed the test.
“Turkish nationals shielded the nation with their bodies to repel the attempted coup, under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkey. All the political parties, both in government and opposition, the uninfected elements of the Armed Forces and Police Force as well as media stood up against the attempted coup,” she said.
The Ambassador added that Fetullahist Terrorist Organisation (FETO) – an organisation founded in 1970s by Fethullah Gulen, disguising itself as a charitable educational movement – were later identified as being responsible for the evil attack on the people of Turkey.
“FETO, the mastermind of the failed coup plot, had attempted to spread across all areas of the economy via its shell entities – particularly in the education, media and banking sectors, but their efforts have been thwarted in Turkey,” she indicated.
However, she notified that FETO is still present in around 160 countries with thousands of schools, businesses, NGOs and media houses worldwide – indicating that their modus operandi is the same all around the world, as they aim to infiltrate and enlarge their global economy and political influence.
She indicated that the Turkish government is therefore cautioning all countries that are friends to the republic to identify and close-down all institutions that are owned by FETO, or convert them into governmental institutions.
“They constitute a direct security threat for any country where they operate. After losing its backbone in Turkey, it is now trying to survive by making use of its structure abroad. We therefore continue to warn our friends against these structures. In this regard, we have carried out approximately 16,000 initiatives at various levels to inform our foreign partners regarding the malice of FETO-affiliated entities and individuals,” she noted.
Mrs. Ozlem Ergun Ulueren expressed her unwavering support to families and loved ones of those who lost their lives on the night, as she talked about her personal experienced as a witness residing in Ankara when the event took place.
