The District Chief Executive for the Ellembelle District in the Western Region, Kwesi Bonzoh, is urging manufacturers in the country to look for sustainable alternatives to plastics for packaging products to cut down the environmental cost associated with plastics.
According to him, his assembly spends 15 percent of internally generated funds to clean plastic waste in the area.
Speaking to Citi News on the sidelines of the Assembly’s budget hearing at Esiama, Mr. Bonzoh urged manufacturers to consider using biodegradable packaging materials to reduce plastic pollution.
He said “we drink sachet water, bottled water and leave the waste subconsciously anywhere. The packaging of food and everything that we do generates too much waste. The plastic packaging is just too much”.“Manufacturers should be moving towards biodegradable paper packaging which makes it easier to decompose and then makes it easier to manage, instead of the plastic that is all over the place. We have takeaway bags and many other plastics which are all over around us”.
Mr. Bonzoh urged the Environment Ministry and other environmental regulatory agencies to “be up and doing so they could sit up and assist manufacturers in seeking the innovative and technologically advanced ways of packaging using biodegradable that has less impact. Plastic is the easier option, but the cost to the environment is something that is consuming our environment”.
