The Brew-Hammond Energy Centre at the College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has called on households and owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to commit to the best energy practices.
The Centre said it will continue to embark on research and educate the public on how they can maximise the use of power at their homes and businesses.
The Energy Centre, in collaboration with the Energy Foundation, with support from the German Government through GIZ, has launched Energy Efficiency Project.
120 Energy Efficiency advisers have been trained under the project to educate 6,000 households and SMEs in Kumasi on adopting best energy efficiency and conservation practices.
The project, which has been piloted in the Greater Accra Region, has already begun in Kumasi and is expected to run for two weeks, after which it will be rolled out across the country.
The trained personnel under the project will also engage in data collection and energy audits at various homes as well as distribute energy-saving devices to the households.
Speaking at the launch of the project at the KNUST, Head of the Brew-Hammond Energy Centre, Professor Imoro Braimah, said the advisers will train and give energy efficiency tips to households and SMEs in the Ashanti Region.
He said the objective of the project is to introduce best practices in households and SMEs in order to reduce electricity consumption and cost.
“The focus has been on using solar energy to power these energy appliances and I am happy to inform you that we have produced a prototype of a solar-powered air-conditioner and the solar laboratory at the College of Engineering,” he revealed.
Professor Braimah called for support for the Centre to enable play a larger role in enhancing energy efficiency in the country.
A representative of the Ministry of Energy, Lartey Lawrence, called on the Energy Efficiency advisers to put in their best to ensure the project is a successful one.
He said issues about energy conservation were a priority for the Ministry, adding that it will continue to support initiatives geared towards Energy Efficiency and conservation.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah indicated that Government is committed to supporting the energy sector in providing cost-effective and affordable electricity supply.
