Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has served notice that households should expect power cuts over the next five days after it advised the Power Distribution Service (PDS) to begin the redistribution of power.
This is following the disruption from the construction of the road interchange at the Pokuase-APC junction which has taken the 33kV Aboadze-Tema.The disruption has “limited the capacity of the transmission network,” GRIDCo said in a statement.
“GRIDCo had accordingly advised Power Distribution Services (PDS) to redistribute loads at various Bulk Supply Points to ensure system stability. This may result in outages to some electricity consumers,” the statement said.
The country has been hit with major blackouts this past week.
This week marked the fourth time in three years that Ghana has faced near-total grid shutdowns.
The blackouts have been attributed to ongoing construction of the road interchange at Pokuase, which has necessitated the diversion of GRIDCo’s 330kV transmission line towers that runs from Tema to Aboadze in that vicinity.
The Chief Executive Officer GRIDCo Jonathan Amoako-Baah had earlier said he expected the challenges to last for a few days.
The company has also stressed that there is no load shedding ongoing.
“There is enough stock for the generation stations to provide the electricity we need in Ghana. We are having these challenges and difficulties because of the project at Pokuase. There is no dumsor. When we finish this work, we are going to go back to the reliability of supply that we have been used to in the past.”
Minister of Energy Peter Amewu also assured that power will be normalised in some five days.
Aside from these challenges, PDS, which recently took over power distribution from the Electricity Company of Ghana, has assured that it receives enough power to distribute to Ghanaians.
Also allaying load-shedding fears, the Director of Communications at PDS, William Boateng, “we have enough generation at our end. If we are off, it means that we have announced planned maintenance.”
