As part of efforts to boost education in Zabzugu, the Member of Parliament for the area, Alhassan Umar Abaako has presented bags of cement and roofing sheets to some communities within the district.
The gesture is to assist those communities to put up accommodation for teachers.
Zabzugu district is one of the most deprived districts in the Northern Region, faced with infrastructural challenges with many of its schools still under trees.
Lack of accommodation for teachers in most of the villages makes it difficult to attract teachers to the area.
The situation has compelled the Parent Teachers Association (PTAS) in the villages to come up with community self-initiatives for putting up such structures.
They have sent appeals to the MP for assistance to help them roof and plaster the buildings.
The MP who saw the request as genuine and one in line with his vision of improving the quality of education, quickly mobilised resources from his share of the District Assembly Common Fund to buy roofing sheets and cement for the communities.
At the presentation ceremony in Zabzugu the MP, Mr. Abaako said he is committed at serving his people, particularly in education.
“I know teachers accommodation is a challenge not only in our district but across the country. As part of my vision as an MP to see to the betterment of education, I deem it appropriate and honour to ensure that teachers who are sent to our communities have a decent place to stay. This would go a long way to ensure teaching and learning is improved because the teachers would no longer have to commute from the district capital to the communities.”
The District Director of Education, Alhassan Alidu Jnr, expressed happiness for the support from the MP and pledged that the material would be put to good use.
“There are still many challenges in our schools as many school children still lie on their bellies to study and it is a big challenge. We still want to appeal to the MP in that regard. We are assuring him that the donations will be put to good use.”
The beneficiaries communities include:
1. Kukpalga D/A prim
2. Gor Tani D/A prim
