The Anhwiaso Divisional Police Command in the Western Region, says it is providing protection for management of the Ghana Bauxite Company as staff continue to agitate over poor working conditions.
Its commander, Chief Superintendent John Osei Bonsu indicated that this protection has become necessary as the Command continues to gather information needed to resolve the matter.
The management of the company at Awaso in the Bibiani-Anyaaso Bekwai Municipality met with the Municipal Chief Executive, Alfred Amoah, over the unrest. In the past few days, workers of the company have been protesting over poor working conditions and low wages.
The workers were reported to have set ablaze some offices of the company as well as the residence of their Human Resource Manager.
But Supt. Bonsu has told Citi News that plans are afoot to ensure that calm is restored.
“Investigations are ongoing seriously. We are making progress and very soon we will make some arrest and put people before court. The situation is calm for now because we have been able to secure vital information. The managing officers of the company are under protection and the town is calm. Some prominent people in the town have stepped in, encouraging both parties to come to the negotiation table and resume the dialogue. We believe this will yield positive results,” he said.
W/R: Minister advises Ghana Bauxite Company to halt operations over violent staff protest
The Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Kweku Asomah Cheremeh has asked the Bauxite Mining Company to halt operations for now following the violent protest by the staff.
The Minister said the security available to cover the field is not enough to safeguard everyone hence its advice to the company.
“We have assured the bauxite company that the confidence we have in them as the company doing bauxite is very high but for now they should exercise restraint from going back to the field as security on the ground is not all that safe. We have few police officers around there who will be needed to beef up security by bringing more security,” he said.
