District Chief Executive for Gomoa Central, Benjamin Kojo Otoo is canvassing for a YES vote in the December 17 referendum.
He believes a YES vote will inure to the benefit of the people at the local level in holding their leaders accountable.
Speaking to Citi News, Kojo Otoo called on all to embrace the process and be part of the decision to select the right people to lead local level administration.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to all people who are expressing dissenting opinions that this referendum should go for NO. I will say we should go for a big YES because that will then give power to the people so that they can choose the people they want to lead them,” he said.
“Currently everything is politics but let us ensure that the constitution is respected. Also, that amendment will empower the grassroots to choose the kind of leaders that they want. For instance, as a DCE, I wish that my people will either affirm or reject me if I am not performing but I believe that once you are doing your work well, no matter which political party you belong, I am sure people will vote for you,” he added.
The District Chief Executive is further advocating broader consultations especially among indigenes and chiefs of local areas as a way of engineering development.
“Chiefs take active parts in political activities, some of them, clothe themselves in political colours. They sometimes hide behind the politicians by making some statements. It is unfortunate, because it is expected that they will play that neutral role, since we are talking about active political participation of the grassroot democracy,” he said.
December 17 Referendum
The December 17 referendum is to decide on a possible amendment of Article 55 (3) of the 1992 Constitution to enable political parties to sponsor candidates for local level elections.
The outcome will have either of the following outcomes: If the electorate votes YES, the election of MMDCEs, Assembly and Unit Committee Members in the near future will be on a partisan basis.
If they vote NO, then the election of these candidates for the local level elections will be on a non-partisan basis as being practised now.
