The Electoral Commission says it is in the process of paying officers who were engaged for the voters’ register exhibition exercise which took place in September and only have accounts with defunct savings and loans companies.
The Commission on Wednesday began payment of all operatives of the exhibition exercise except those who provided accounts bearing the names of defunct savings and loans companies.
Earlier, the exhibition officers threatened a protest to disrupt the upcoming December 17 District Level Elections if they were not paid.
Speaking to Citi News, Communications Officer for the Electoral Commission Sylvia Annor indicated that the affected officials will have to undergo a process to have their monies paid.
“This is the message I received from the Commission. All the operatives are being paid except for those who provided accounts bearing the names of savings and loans and it’s being worked on. That isn’t to say that they wouldn’t be paid but they need to go through a certain process. They would definitely get their money. In fact, if it hasn’t been for the process involved, I’m sure they would have received it. And that is why we are informing the general public specifically those involved,” she noted.
In September, the Electoral Commission recruited some individuals to supervise the week-long exhibition exercise which took place at thousands of polling stations across the country.
But nearly four months after the exercise, the Commission had not paid those engaged for the exercise.
On the back of this, these persons started demanding for the payment of allowances a few days ago.
The cries of these EC registration officers have come at a time when the Commission is focusing on running a successful district-level election on December 17.
Exhibition exercise creating confusion
The opposition National Democratic (NDC) had earlier accused the Electoral Commission of supervising a shambolic voters’ register exhibition exercise.
According to the party, the EC’s failure to provide them with a provisional register, change of codes of polling centres without consultation, absence of expected numbers of registered voters in polling stations among others, were some challenges that the exercise was fraught with.
General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia expressed disappointment in the process.
