Dormaa Ahenkro, April 11, GNA - Barimah Yeboah Kordie, the Aduanahene of the Dormaa Traditional Area has suggested the expulsion of Junior High School students who failed to bring parents and guardians along with them during school community activities.
He explained that their failure broke the strong partnership that existed between schools and parents to effectively monitor the students and ensure their academic and educational progress.
Barimah Yeboah Kordie was speaking at the maiden Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Dormaa Municipal Authority Junior High School in Dormaa Ahenkro.
He noted that parents’ inability to participate in school community activities such as speech and prize giving day, open days, quiz competitions largely sent a wrong and negative signal that they were not committed in safeguarding the education and welfare of their wards.
“When they attend such programmes they become updated with the trends and what the school demands from them in relation to their wards’ educational welfare”, he added.
He expressed concern about the engagement of school children in child labour and warned parents against pushing their children into such practices.
“Do not send your children to sell in the market centres during school hours for financial gains but rather put premium on their education”, he said.
In her welcoming address, Rosemary Appiah, the Headmistress of the School, said the school started in 2003 with 15 students, but had witnessed a steady growth with a student population of over 300.
She enumerated a number of challenges confronting the school including; lack of teachers’ staff common room, lack of computer laboratory and computers, and insufficient funding to meet administrative expenses.
