Tema, July 17, GNA - Residents near the Sakumono beach have been called upon to desist from dumping refuse at the beach as it poses health hazards to the community.
Madam Emelda Armarh, a member of the Friends of the Sakumono Beach, told the Ghana News Agency that the rubbish being dumped at the beach was not the best.
Madam Armarh said it was worrying as some residents have dug holes at the beach where they emptied their refuse into.
“We have a beautiful beach and tourists love it. There is therefore the need to keep it clean,” she stated.
According to her, for the past six months, members of her group which is made up of retirees, have been using their pocket monies to ensure that the refuse dumped at the beach were cleared.
She therefore called on the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to ensure that a garbage truck or skip was positioned at the beach and regular emptying is done to ensure a clean beach.
She said with the provision of a garbage truck, revelers would also desist from littering the beach as that also add up to the filth.
Sakumono beach popularly known as Titanic beach is an open beach where revelers, both men, women and children throng every weekend and holidays to enjoy themselves and relax leaving behind filth mostly plastic bottles, disposable cups and plates and papers.
