Tema Aug. 2, GNA - Mr. Felix Mensah Nii Annan-La, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has observed the need to consolidate Ghana’s democracy through the Town Hall Meetings concept.
“Town Hall meetings constitute an important means of consolidating our democracy. It affords policy makers and members of the general public an opportunity for a productive face-to-face interaction,” he informed
He made this observation on Tuesday during the national launch of Town Hall Meetings at the forecourt of the TMA by the Minister of Information, Mr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.
He said it helped government to feel the pulse of the public in order to better assess the impact of government policies and programmes adding that “the President had assured Ghanaians that he would run an open and accountable government and that is what he has started.”
As part of his ‘Tema restoration agenda’, the MCE said TMA was coming up with a programme to repair all broken street lights and build more to light up the whole metropolis.
He identified other areas to be covered by the agenda including sanitation, the protection of key water resources in the Metropolis and the sealing and re-surfacing of streets.
He said he had put together a programme to tackle unemployment in Tema taking advantage of the numerous industries in the Metropolis because “in Tema, I shouldn’t have problem with jobs because all the industries are here.”
Mr. Annan-La added that “I am signing a memorandum of understanding with all industries in Tema to make sure the youth in Tema are given a quota of the jobs from these industries. I am also negotiating for placements in the industries for students to do their internships.”
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), he said there were lapses in the collection of revenue within the assembly “and I am taking measures to address them. Very soon I will abrogate all revenue contracts and would ask everybody to reapply in order to streamline the way revenue is collected.”
He explained that a lot of people were contracted with just an offer letter without proper contractual agreements adding “even those with contracts didn’t go through the procurement processes, and once you’ve violated the process, your contract would be abrogated.”
