Obuasi (Ash), Oct 25, GNA – The joint military/police taskforce assigned the job of stopping illegal mining is to extend its operation to the Central Region.
The Commander, Colonel William Agyapong, has already led a reconnaissance team to determine where to set up its forward operating base (FOB), met with Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and other stakeholders.
Illegal mining has been pronounced in the Twifo-Ati-Morkwa, Upper Denkyira East, Upper Denkyira West, Assin South, Assin North, Gomoa East and the Hemang Lower Denkyira Districts.
Mr. Kwamena Duncan, the Regional Minister, welcomed the decision to deploy the soldiers and police officers to safeguard the environment – protect river bodies, forests, farms and farmlands.
He applauded the taskforce for the good job so far done and expressed confidence that this would be sustained.
The team later toured areas that had been worst affected by the activities of illegal miners.
Col Agyapong put everybody engaged in illegal mining in the region on notice, to quit because they would not be allowed to continue their destructive activities.
