Accra. Jan. 21, GNA - WO1 James Worlanyo Obimpeh and Lance Corporal Gabriel Osei who emerged as best Soldiers in the categories of Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and Junior NCO in exercise ‘Master Commando’ have arrived in Ghana after a seven-day fun-filled tour in Nairobi, Kenya and Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
WO1 Obimpeh and Lance Corporal Osei are men of the 66 Artillery Regiment, Ho and Fifth Infantry Battalion respectively, under the Southern Command brigade of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The all-expenses paid vacation to Nairobi and Dubai is the ultimate prize awarded to the two upon winning competitions initiated by Brigadier General Thomas Oppong-Preprah, the General Officer Commanding, Southern Command to unearth talents of soldiers in the brigade to deliver their best in every field of endeavour.
The funding for the trip was borne solely by Adansi Travel and Tours, whiles an overseeing officer Major Martin Dey, General Staff Officer, Operations and Training, Southern Command, who accompanied them was solely funded by the Command.
At a brief welcoming ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport at the weekend, Brigadier General Oppong-Preprah said the trip formed part of activities to recognise the output, professionalism, conduct and loyalty of the soldiers to the people of Ghana adding that the fun-filled trip policy would be sustained.
Brig. General Oppong-Preprah urged the soldiers to share their experiences with their colleagues to encourage them to constantly display appreciable levels of good attributes, to attract commendation.
Speaking to the Press after the welcome ceremony, Colonel George Kwame Tawiah Sam, the Command Operations Officer, said in implementing the policy, competitive training exercises are being instituted whiles defunct ones are being reactivated and fine-tuned just to get the troops to train and sharpened to participate and thus winners will be awarded appropriately.
He said although oncoming competitions would have similar ultimate prizes, they would not be limited only to Kenya and the UAE, but will also include an award, whose winner would visit the Seventh Infantry Brigade, in the United Kingdom.
The soldiers in turn presented a glass sculpture of one of the many sights, which they toured, (the Burj Arab, situated 500 meters into the sea, having 55 floors with its first five floors beneath the sea water, a suspended tennis court and an helipad), to the Brigade Commander.
Recounting a few of their experience to the Ghana News Agency, the soldiers reminisced their experiences at places such as the Orphan Elephants, Desert Safari, the mega tall Burj Khalifa - a height of 2,722 ft - all which they said had boosted their "can do" spirit, as well as given a shot in the arm to their confidence and self esteem.
