Sunyani, March 05, GNA - The citizenry have become discerning concerning their expectations for services from politicians and other public servants, Mr. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister has observed.
He stated that those duty-bearers therefore needed reliable data and information to plan and implement interventions to meet the demands of the people.
Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh made the observation in a speech read on his behalf at a regional stakeholder’s engagement on the 2017 District League Table (DLT) on Tuesday in Sunyani.
It aimed at creating a platform to deepen dialogue and support debate on local development and improved service delivery to encourage lesson sharing between representatives of high and low ranking Districts in the region.
The forum organised by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Local Government Service (LGS) was attended by Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs), Coordinating Directors, Regional Heads of Department, security officials and the media,
The DLT is an initiative introduced in 2014 by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana and UNICEF and aimed at assessing the level of developments in the Municipalities and Districts in the country by using indicators on six key sectors - health, education, sanitation, water, security and governance.
Mr. Asomah-Cheremeh encouraged the poorly-performed Districts to endeavour to perform better on the DLT to ensure responsiveness and improved socio-economic service delivery in the region.
Dr. Nana Ato Atta, the Head of LGS in an address read on his behalf stressed that improving service delivery in the local areas was a mandatory function imposed on the Assemblies through efficiency and judicious utilisation of resources.
He added the DLT had therefore brought about competition among MMDAs, inspired district level performances and deepened the efforts of decentralisation for the Assemblies to deliver effectively for improved livelihoods of the populace.
Madam Mavis Zupork Dome, Research Officer of CDD Ghana stated that DLT did not aim at naming and shame any Assembly but to promote proactive development by the use of simple tools for measuring levels of development in terms of the delivery of key social services.
