Accra, April 12, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced a farmer Henry Yegbe to three years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing narcotic drug without lawful authority.
Henry had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge, but after trial the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, found him guilty of the charge and sentenced him accordingly.
In sentencing, the court said it took into consideration the three months Yegbe had already spent in custody, as well as his plea for mitigation.
He is to serve three years in hard labour.
Police Chief Inspector Adu, prosecuting, told the court that on December 1, 2017, at about 1240 hours, the Adenta police patrol team led by Inspector Samuel Tieku was at Adenta new site on patrols when they saw the convict in a suspicious manner.
He said while being interrogated, he took to his heels upon pursuit by the Police he was arrested.
The prosecution said a search conducted on him led to the retrieval of a polythene bag containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The Prosecution said Yegbe claimed ownership of the exhibit, he was therefore charged with the offence.
