Akonkonti-Odumase, (B/A), May 18, GNA - President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the creation of new administrative regions is for the purpose of bringing development to the people and not for any other consideration
This was however going to be determined by the outcome of the referendum to be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The President was interacting with the chiefs and people of Nkoranza and the Coalition of Bono Chiefs – spearheading the effort to get a new region, Bono East, created for them, at the start of his three-day official visit to the Brong-Ahafo Region, at Akonkonti-Odumase in the Nkoranza North District.
He was accompanied by some Ministers of State and Members of Parliament (MP).
President Akufo-Addo underlined the need to intensify public sensitization on the impending referendum to enable everybody to have better understanding of what their vote would mean.
The constitutional requirement is that there should be 50 per cent voter participation and 80 per cent votes for the regions to be created.
The government had facilitated all the constitutional processes and the Commission of Inquiry that held public petitions was expected to submit its recommendation to the President by next month, June.
President Akufo-Addo said he was not in any doubt that there would be favourable recommendations from the Commission in respect of the Bono East considering the interest, passion and commitment demonstrated by the chiefs and people.
He assured the people that the government would not disappoint them and would work hard to meet their expectations.
The President said although his government inherited a "murky" economy, they had been doing everything to make it become more robust and resilient to put the nation “beyond aid”.
Nana Okofo Agyepong III, the Acting President of the Nkoranza Traditional Council, commended the government for its pro-poor interventions.
He applauded the bold decision taken by President Akufo-Addo to implement the free Senior High School (SHS).
He added that the Planting for Food and Jobs programmes was another good initiative.
Nana Agyepong III said he was confident the One-District-One-Factory project would also be implemented to create jobs and wealth for the people.
