Bawku (UE), July 13, GNA - Hajia Hawa Ninchemah, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has reaffirmed government’s commitment to fix the Bolgatanga- Bawku road as it worked out contract challenges associated with the project for the purpose of transparency.
She said as soon as those challenges were fixed, work would resume on that highway that links Bolgatanta and Bawku to neighbouring Togo and provinces in the West of Burkina Faso.
The MCE noted that government’s vision was to ensure a transformed economy and an accelerated standard of living of the ordinary citizenry through job creation, increased food production and industrialisation among others and said the road sector, especially the Bawku one were tools that would aid government to achieve the goal.
Hajia Ninchema who was addressing the Chiefs and People of the Bawku Traditional area on Thursday said the purpose of the meeting was to set the records straight on government policies and programmes, addressing concerns and clearing any ambiguity on the minds of the people.
She said government was implementing a number of interventions geared towards the development of the people and indicated that visibly among the programmes were the free Senior High School policy, the Planting for Food and Jobs, (PFJ), the one village one dam, the Nation Builders’ corps, drastic reduction in taxations and utility tariffs.
Hajia Ninchemah said since education was the bedrock for national development, government had constructed a number of educational facilities including; classroom blocks, toilet facilities to end open defecation among pupils, and reviving of the educational oversight committees to improve Basic Education Certificate Examination and the West Africa Certificate Examination results.
She disclosed that the implementation of the Ghana School Feeding Programme in the Bawku Municipality was on course as the number of beneficiary schools had increased from 32 to 53, covering a total of 21,503 pupils.
Touching on health, the MCE said the Assembly had taken steps to construct the Community based Health Planning Services (CHPS) Compounds, expanded the existing ones to include; maternity services and added that the expansion had moved health services to the door steps of the people.
She disclosed that about 5,571 farmers had registered to cultivate about 2,853 hectares of various crops, and urged the constituents to support government in the implementation of development programmes that would improve livelihood of the people.
In response to questions from Mr Umar Sani Sheriff, Coordinator for youth programme in Bawku on the dormant nature of the National Health Insurance Scheme in the area, the MCE said government had reimbursed service providers and indicated that the NHIS would soon be active as it used to be.
Tahiru Kundimah, Assembly member for the Possum electoral area urged the people to see the improvement of sanitation as a collective responsibility and indicated that it was every citizen’s duty to ensure that the environment was clean for the development of the people.
He said the assembly was enforcing the sanitation bye-laws to prosecute person who may fall short to the laws, and called on residents in the area to be environmentally friendly as it was the only place they lived and admonished them to keep it clean.
Dr Davis Azari, President for Visually Impaired Persons in Bawku commended government for reimbursing the GH¢50,000.00 support to People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in the area, and said it had come to improve on the living conditions of PWDs.
Traditional authorities, the clergy, and heads of decentralised departments, women groups, youth associations, farmers, civil society organisation, the security, political parties, and the media were at the meeting.
