Accra, Aug. 7, GNA – The Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM) has launched its 60th anniversary celebration with the call on its membership to propagate the good name of Islam, good work of the mission and maintain peace wherever they find themselves.
The anniversary celebration, marks the beginning of better things to come in the life of the organisation with a more positive attitude and commitment on the part of members and leadership to the course.
The year-long celebration, would be on the theme “Empowering and Equipping Muslims for Sustainable Development”.
Nii Onyaa Flo Chief Sheikh M. J Sissy, Chairman, Ga Central Council of Zongo Chiefs, said although the mission was formally formed in 1957, its original formation dates as far back as the 1930’s, and “it’s encouraging to know that the mission has stacked together for all these years.”
He said over the years, the works and projects of the mission was evident in the areas of capacity building, establishment of mosque and schools, introduction of income generation activities among others.
“The theme for the celebration goes a long way to remind us all about the task ahead. You cannot be empowered without self-empowerment and the strength of that lays within every one of us, remains untouched to its fullest potential.”
He said empowerment was often addressed as a gateway to self-empowerment and national development and as Muslims, “we empower ourselves with the Quran and Sunnah, which cannot be exchanged or replaced.”
Chief Sissy noted that although the mission was as old as the nation, and had seen progress in its activities, it could still be better with the contributions of members to be able to reach out to other Muslim communities across the country.
“Strength in our numbers must depict our unity, our success and achievement, and we owe it to ourselves a duty to contribute our quota to the total development of the mission and the nation”
Sheikh Dr Amen Bonsu, National Chairman of the GMM givi9ng the history of the Mission said 60 years ago, some devoted and patriotic Muslims who saw the need to advance the propagation of Islam through diverse ways and also for the development of the nation came together to form it.
He said in order to have a strong financial system, the GMM is proposing an “infaak” system that would give members the opportunity to pay one-tenth of their monthly earnings as contribution towards the growth and development of the mission.
He commended the fore bearers for their efforts in creating a platform and an enabling environment to worship and serve Allah, and urged members to be committed, continue to show solidarity and hold on to the rope of Allah and be united for the good of the mission.
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, together with the national chairman and national Imam of the mission launched the celebration.
Activities lined up for the year-long celebration include Ghana Muslim Mission Youth 50th anniversary conference, commissioning of ultramodern Masjid at the Islamic Senior High School, Kumasi, regional quiz and Quran reading competitions, regional sports competitions, and the 60th anniversary conference to be held in Kumasi.
The GMM was founded in 1957 as a religious organisation to foster peace and unity among Muslims and other religions in Ghana, formulate and pursue policies and programmes to propagate the true teachings of Islam to Muslims as well as Non-Muslims.
It was formed to also mobilise resources for the establishment of both Islamic and secular educational institutions at all levels.
