Prampram (GAR), Sept 26, GNA - Residents of Ningo-Prampram district who default in the payment of rates and fees would be prosecuted by the Assembly from January 2019.
Mr Jonathan Teye Doku, Ningo-Prampram District Chief Executive, said residents have a grace period to regularize their payments by the end of the year or face prosecution.
Mr Doku noted that the inability and refusal of residents to honour their civic responsibility of paying tolls and taxes was adversely affecting the provision of crucial services and developmental projects.
He explained that the Assembly used its internally generated fund to finance most of the projects such as school blocks, furniture, markets.
According to him, the disbursement of the District Assemblies' Common Fund to some extent depended on the contribution and returns from the district to the national coffers.
He therefore urged developers in the area who had constructed structures without the requisite building permits as well as those operating without business permits among others to regularize their operations during the grace period.
“Residents must pay their fees and rates to give them the moral justification to question developmental issues in the district, ”he indicated.
He added that education and other departments in the district were seriously challenged logistically and that local revenue was not enough to meet all the needs.
Mr Doku also appealed to the media and other stakeholders to continually educate citizens on their civic responsibilities which included honoring their tax obligations.
