Kpando Gadza (V/R), Oct. 1, GNA - Gadza Municipal Assembly Basic School in the Kpando Municipality of the Volta Region, has held its maiden speech and prize-giving day to celebrate a recent surge in academic success.
Mr Kudzo Agbale, Headmaster, said the event, which was on the theme “Education, the means of developing responsible and accountable future leaders”, had become necessary to encourage the efforts of students, the community and its leaders on whose support the School had survived over the years.
He said the 72-year old school recorded a 100 per cent success in the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examinations, and expressed hope that recent investments in the School will propel its enrolment, which remained low with just 13 students registered for the 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination.
The Headmaster attributed the enrolment slump to the School's lack of toilet facilities, forcing pupils to either use toilet in neighbouring homes or defecate in the open.
He said the School also lacked textbooks and furniture, and hinted of plans to construct a new classroom block to replace the decades old termite infested block which had no space for staff.
GNA gathered that the School established by members of three communities; Gadza, Dzoanti, and Agudzi, has no library and its computer laboratory is being hosted by a nearby house.
Mr Kojo Addae-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of Data Bank Ghana, launched an Akpokli Education and Career Fund with GH¢15,000.00 seed money donated by Mr Bryan Acheampong, Minister of State in charge of National Security.
Mr Acheampong, further promised a six unit classroom block in honour of one Robert Gbenge, an in-law who hailed from Kpando.
Togbui Kodzoga V, Chief of Kpando Gadza urged parents to support the Fund to transform the lives of the present and future generations.
A six-unit classroom block and a kitchen were commissioned to mark the event, whiles Union Ghana, a professional association, pledged to support the School with toilet facilities.
Among those honoured was Luc Sommers, a Belgian cross-country cyclist whose organization "Emu" supported the classroom and kitchen projects.
