Accra, Oct 15, GNA – Mr. George Lamptey, President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) has said, he is happy with the re-introduction of the boxing league, adding "it will give us good amateur boxers in the future”.
The boxing league has been re-introduced as the Bukom Fist of Fury and started on Friday, October 12, at the Bukom Boxong Arena after a nine year hiatus.
Mr. Lamptey, in an interview with the GNA Sports said the GABF was blessed to have the competition, because it would put the boxers in competitive spirit, as they would box every two weeks.
"First day so good and you can see all the bouts were competitive in the juvenile and amateur divisions. The only obstacle was the rains, as it deterred the crowd from turning up in their numbers.
“But the boxers demonstrated quality techniques and some of them could be invited into the national team for justify," he said.
"As amateurs you need to throw more punches and that is exactly what they are doing. This league is going to give us more experience and the needed exposure to the boxers. We expect to produce good amateurs who would graduate into good professionals,” he added.
The league is expected to continue every two weeks and would last for 26 weeks. At Every bout night there would be at least three professional fights in addition to the juvenile and amateur fights.
