Old Ningo (GAR), Dec. 10, GNA - Mr Sam Nartey George, Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram has called on chiefs and family heads in Ningo to preserve the town’s farm lands to promote farming in the area.
Mr Sam George said it was critical to create a land bank in the District to encourage the youth in the area to engage in farming activities.
He gave the advice during the National Farmers’ Day celebrations at Ols Ningo where 10 outstanding local farmers and fisher folks were awarded.
He stressed that the natives should not sell all their lands to real estate developers adding that “our forefathers left the land for us, and we must preserve it for other generations”.
The MP pleaded with family land owners and the Ningo Traditional Council to allow the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly (NIPDA) to manage such lands, which they could then give portions to the youth to engage in farming.
Mr Jonathan Teye Doku, Ningo-Prampram District Chief Executive on his part disclosed that his outfit had been appealing to the families to release lands to the Assembly to manage.
Mr Doku added that some families who bought into the idea had released about 10,000 acres of land to the Assembly for management.
Those released parcels of land, he said, would be zoned for farming, industries and building ensuring that no land designated for farming would be sold for development.
Nene Kano Atiapa II, Acting President of the Ningo Traditional Council, reiterated the need for families in charge of lands to release them for proper management noting that in accordance with the traditions of the Ningo people, the Council does not own lands.
