Tamale, Jan. 7, GNA - The leadership of the Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA) and representatives of Anufors (Chokosis) have called on members of the Konkomba and Chokosi ethnic groups to help ensure peace and calm in the Chereponi District.
This follows a tribal conflict between the Konkomba and the Anufors over a piece of land at Naduni on January 1, 2019, which led to loss of lives and property in the district.
They made the call on Monday at a joint press conference in Tamale, attended by the Northern regional Minister, Mr Salifu Saeed, the Member of Parliament for Chereponi, leadership of the two ethnic groups and other invited guests.
Mr Daniel Torbi, a member of the KOYA, who read a speech on behalf of the leadership of the KOYA and the Chokosi, said the two groups jointly condemned the violent ethnic clashes between the Anufors and their Konkomba neighbours in the district, which had claimed lives, displaced many people as well as the destruction property.
He said the leaders of both sides asked the people to bury their acrimony and return to the days when they lived together in harmony.
"In a conflict like this, there is no winner but all are losers of property and children are in jeopardy" he said.
Mr Torbi commended the Government, the Regional Security Council, the Regional Minister and stakeholders for acting expeditiously to control the situation.
He appealed to Government and all other organizations to support them to find permanent peace to speed up the needed development in the district.
Mr Salifu Saeed assured the people of Chereponi that Government was doing its best to curb the conflict and would not be biased in dealing with it.
He said as a matter of urgency, an emergency peace conference would be held on Thursday with the two ethnic groups, stakeholders and religious leaders to mediate and bring life back to normalcy in the area.
Mr Saeed urged philanthropic organizations to donate to the victims and support them in these hard times.
Mr Moses Mabengba, a former Northern Regional Minister, also commended the work of the Regional Coordinating Council for bringing the leadership of the two ethnic groups together to find a lasting solution to the conflict between the two ethnic groups.
He called on the media to stop reporting stories that were not true or factual and rather report on issues that were geared towards building peace, unity and development.
He warmed that anyone caught trying to rekindle the situation would face the law.
