Cape Coast, Jan. 18, GNA - A market survey conducted in the Cape Coast Metropolis by the GNA has shown a sharp increase in the prices of the various foodstuffs after the Christmas festivities.
Prices of foodstuffs such as, yam, cocoyam, cassava, pepper, onions, garden-eggs and tomatoes have gone up sharply but plantain is relatively cheap compared to the other food commodities.
A box of tomatoes which sold at GH¢450.00, last month, is now being sold between GH¢ 800.00 and GH¢1000.00, while a small paint container of tomatoes has gone up from GH¢35.00 to GH¢ 50.00.
Additionally, a mini bag of onions has risen from GH¢350.00 to GH¢400.00 while ‘olonka' full is now going for GH¢35.00 against GH¢20.00 during the Yuletide.
A tuber of yam is now between GH¢8.00 and GH¢15.00, depending on the size, a small basket of cassava and cocoyam is now GH¢15.00 compared to the GH¢12.00 previously.
A big size of tilapia which used to sell at GH¢15.00 is now going for GH¢20.00, while five small size of red fish is now GH¢10.00 whilst smoked salmon which was sold between GH¢10.00 to GH¢15.00 is now selling between GH¢18.00 to GH¢ 20.00.
The market women said the prices of the food stuffs had shot up mainly because of the increase in cost of transportation from the farm gate to the market centres as well as the weather conditions.
Madam Abenaa fosua, one of the traders at Kotokraba market, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the high cost of living had compelled farmers to increase their produce at the farm gate.
