Tarkwa (W/R), March 9, GNA - A ground breaking ceremony has been performed to begin the reconstruction of the Tarkwa and Abosso park, popularly known as the T&A park.
Gold Fields plans to construct a 10, 400 seating capacity stadia to argument the current seating capacity of 400.
The new facility when completed would have a VIP and spectator's seat, dressing rooms for teams and match officials, a commentary box, press conference area, facilities for physically challenged spectators, an emergency, medical, control and doping rooms.
The pitch would also have a perimeter wall, an inner perimeter fence, floodlights for evening matches, an electronic scoreboard with a standby generator.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Alfred Baku, Executive Vice President (EVP) and Head of Gold Fields, West Africa, explained that the T&A park would be one of the venues for hosting local premier league matches, added that it would be one of the most modern sports complex in the country and the sub-region.
Mr Baku recalled that during their 25th anniversary celebrations last year, Gold Fields pledged to undertake two flagship projects this year which were the reconstruction of the T&A park and upgrading of the Apinto government hospital which is one of the oldest health facilities in the country.
He stated that the engineering works have been completed and Golds Fields would be committing close to 100 million Ghana cedis towards these projects.
"Sports and health go hand-in-hand, and so it should not be a surprise that we are also investing in the upgrade of the Apinto government hospital" he pointed out.
He further stated that the upgrade of the hospital would include renovation of the out-patient department, female ward, administration block and a sanitary facility.
According to him, a paediatric, Ear Nose and Throat centre would also be added to the facility.
Also, the new medical hub would have a fully equipped accident and emergency centre, as well as a renal and dialysis centre, and would be the first in the Western Region, Mr. Baku indicated.
The EVP and Head of Gold Fields, West Africa announced that "work would begin this year, and we will closely monitor progress to ensure that the reconstruction is delivered to the highest quality, within budget, and within the time frames given by the contractors",
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso Constituency Dr. Saminu Kwadwo Nuamah, who represented the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah said "If you are working as a company it's important that you give back to the community and that is exactly what Goldfields is doing".
He entreated the Health and Sports ministries to ensure that the facilities were properly managed and maintained when completed and handed over to them.
The MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency, Mr. George Meriku Duker and Tufuhene of Nbease Nsuta, Nana Adu Panyin II expressed appreciation to Goldfields.
