Winneba (C/R) March 14, GNA – Following the advice of the Central Regional Security Council some campuses of the University of Education, Winneba, (UEW) has been closed down indefinitely.
Mr. Kwamena Duncan, Central Regional Minister who is the Chairman of the security council announced this at a press conference on Thursday and said the closure was as a result of demonstrations by students on campus which started on the Tuesday, March 11, 2019 and became violent on Thursday.
He noted that the action of some of the students led to the vandalising of a number of properties.
The beef of some students’ was for the reinstatement of Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, a dismissed lecturer, and also for the removal of the Vice Chancellor Very Rev. Father Professor Afful-Broni.
Mr Duncan explained that the glowing insecurity on Campus was a matter of concern and the council therefore directed that the students leave campus by 1800 hours on Thursday, March 14, 2019.
He commended the Police for their efforts in controlling the situation since the protests started.
Earlier in the day some irate students blocked the road to the North Campus demanding that their colleagues who were having lectures should join them to demonstrate, leading to the Police firing teargas to disperse them.
The aggrieved students pelted some buildings of the school with stones destroying a number of glass windows and doors, wind screens of police vehicles.
One Police officer was reported injured and was rushed to the university clinic.
The demonstrators also blocked a section of the main road from Winneba junction to Winneba Township with big stones, causing traffic jam in the area.
Meanwhile four of the students suspected to be the ring leaders have been arrested by the police.
