Accra, March 21, GNA - The Ghana Meteorological Agency has urged the media to help inform the public on the weather forecast on time.
This is because weather warnings given on time helps the citizenry to take appropriate measures, to mitigate the effects of bad weather conditions.
Mr. Eric Esuman, Deputy Director-General in Charge of Support Service of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, said this when he launched activities to mark the World Meteorological Day (WMD), which falls on March 23rd, 2019.
Touching on the theme: “The Sun, the Earth and the Weather”, said understanding how the Sun influenced weather and climatic change, was critical to the core mission of the World Meteorological Organisation
of building resilient societies, against potentially destructive weather conditions.
He noted, that satellite measurements taken over the last 30 years, showed that the Sun’s energy output had not increased and that, the recent warming observed on Earth could not be attributed to changes in activities of the Sun.
“However, climate related risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security and economic growth, were projected to increase with global warming,” Mr. Esuman said.
He said a change in attitude by people, was key to mitigating the effects of extreme weather and climatic conditions.
“To this effect, investing in disaster prevention mechanisms, as well as early warning systems, is important for sustainable development,” Mr. Esuman noted.
Activities to mark the day would include a clean-up exercise, an outreach programme to some selected senior high schools, radio and television talk shows, a public lecture as well as indoor games and hoisting of flags.
