Wenchi, (B/R), Mar. 23, GNA - The Wenchi Municipal Assembly has awarded contract for the construction of a standard sports stadium in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region to raise revenue for the Assembly.
Works on the project, would be executed by Green Grass Technology, a local sports infrastructure development firm.
It would commerce in April and the pitch is expected to be completed within 12 months.
The Assembly would fund the project, which is made up of changing rooms, sanitary facilities, modern pitch, stands and other auxiliary facilities through its share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
Dr Kwakye Afriyie, the Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive who disclosed this, said the Assembly had raised GH¢163,000 for the development of the pitch and inner perimeter.
Speaking at a youth town hall meeting held in Wenchi, Dr Afriyie said the Assembly was also holding discussions with the Youth and Sports Ministry for patnership to make the project one of the best in the country.
The meeting, which was under theme "united agenda for rapid transformation of Wenchi - take of the youth", created opportunity for the Assembly to interact with, inform and update the people on the development situation in the municipality.
It also offered opportunity for the citizens to ask questions relating to development as a means to deepen local government and enhance transparency and accountability.
Dr Afriyie said, aside revenue generation, on completion the facility, it would also promote sports development in the municipality and the region as a whole as it would be hired or rented as home grounds for interested football clubs, and appealed to wealthy citizens of Wenchi home and abroad to support the project.
Mr Frank Boahen, the Chief Executive Officer of Green Grass Technology said his company had good track record both locally and internationally, and assured that all things being equal the first phase of the project which is the development of the pitch would be completed as scheduled.
He said development of a standard sports stadium required huge financial resources, and advised the Assembly to find innovative ways of generating funds in order not delay construction work.
Mr Boahen said the first phase of the project would create enormous employment opportunities for both skilled and uilled labour in the Municipality.
