Accra, March 23, GNA - The Volta River Authority (VRA) Ladies Association on Saturday embarked an “Energy Conservation Walk” across some principal streets of Accra to educate the public on the need to conserve energy.
The exercise, which forms part of the Association’s 20th Anniversary, saw the ladies, with a few of their male colleagues, walk from the VRA Headquarters, through to Opera Square, Makola Market, Tema Station and back to the Headquarters.
Mr Ebenezer Antwi-Darkwah, the Chief Executive Officer of VRA, said the Authority was undergoing a rigorous restructuring and re-orientation to ensure a rapid turn-around its fortunes to enable it to remain relevant and competitive in the emerging energy market.
As a result, the Authority had launched the 'BRAISE' strategy, a six strategic theme and acronym for: Build, which is to nurture and develop VRA's human capital, restore its finances, and advance internal and external business processes.
It is also to improve operational and project implementation efficiencies, sustain VRA’s position as a market leader and ensure development in a sustainable manner.
The Chief Executive Officer said energy conservation was a collective responsibility and that power consumers had a critical role to play in reducing the power challenges of the country.
Giving some energy conservation tips, Mr Antwi-Darkwah said it was possible to use far less energy than some consumers were using currenlty, and advised individuals and organisations to use LED bulbs, energy efficiency fridges and electrical appliances to save cost and energy.
Saving energy and reducing energy usage, he said, created a healthier environment, a better economy and enabled others to have access to electricity.
He said fridges should be regularly defrosted to keep them running efficiently and if it tended to frost quickly, the door seal should be checked.
Ms Stella M. Dey, the National President of the Association, said the education was necessary because as women, they found themselves everywhere including the workplace, markets, churches, salons, and dressmaking shops and it behoved on them to use electricity efficiently.
“We have the ability to control the use of electricity and educate our children and others on how to conserve electricity to reduce cost,” she added.
She said VRA launched the “Energy Conservation” initiative in 2017 to educate power consumers through various programmes such as forums and talks on the need for energy conservation.
Ms Dey said the initiative formed part of the Association’s objectives to sensitise the public on electricity conservation through educational programmes.
