Cape Coast, July 16, GNA - The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has launched its 40th anniversary with a call on members to seek innovative ways of dealing with contemporary issues confronting higher education management.
The launch, held under the theme: “Professional Development in the 21st century: University administration”, was aimed at taking stock of the achievements and identify the challenges.
It would also help the Association consider the way forward in strengthening its policies and programmes for better performance in the coming years.
As part of the celebration, a continuous professional workshop and a mini congress has been organised to inspire members to develop their professional skills and keep abreast with emerging trends in both educational and administration management.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Kwame Yeboah Junior, the National President of GAUA, said there is the need for university administrators to constantly upgrade their professional competencies.
It is the mandate of university administrators to ensure the smooth running of the management machinery of universities and to empower themselves on the tenets of best administrative services.
He said GAUA existed to promote the advancement of higher education and advance the professional competencies of administrators of universities and equivalent institutions in Ghana.
In this regard, he said, it is imperative to ensure that staff performance is managed appropriately in consonance with international best practices.
Professor Dora Edu-Buandoh, the Pro- Vice Chancellor of UCC said administrators played vital roles in policy and decision making in the universities for the successful running of the affairs of the universities.
She commended the leadership of GAUA for the initiative aimed at making members competent and effective in the discharge of their duties.
Mrs Mildred Asmah, Registrar, College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences (CANS) UCC, appealed to the administrators to focus on achieving their core mandate to aid the effective performance of their institutions.
She said their role was increasingly becoming more problem-solving, hence the need to strengthen their working skills as leaders to be able to live up to the task.
They should also make critical reflections on their current practice and integrate theory and practice to improve the quality of higher education administration.
Mr Samuel Mawusi Asafo, Chief Executive Officer of Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants, said administrators played key strategic roles in the smooth running of the organisation’s business plans and implored members to be guided by best administrative services.
He therefore urged the university administrators to endeavor to obtain higher degrees and professional charters saying, “if university administrators are seen to lack higher education, degrees and professional charters, their influence over the system will be limited”
The participants were drown from the University for Development Studies (UDS), University for Energy and Natural Resources, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Education, Winneba and University of Ghana ( Legon).
