Accra, Nov 28, GNA – The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate action to legitimise the new collective bargaining agreement and address other pressing concerns of teachers.
It said, “the GES should ensure that by 31st December 2019, a new Collective Agreement for its workers was negotiated, agreed upon by all parties involved and signed, to legitimise it, to replace the old one which had expired since 2011”.
In a communique issued and made available to the Ghana News Agency by Ms Philippa Larsen, President of GNAT also said GES should engage stakeholders to discuss a common modality towards implementation of the proposed Aptitude Test for staff promotion.
The communique is an outcome of a meeting held in November at the GNAT Village in the Ashanti region where members deliberated on issues affecting the association and the education sector.
It urged the education service, which is the employer of public sector teachers, to accelerate work on 2019 promotion interviews to prevent the creation of a backlog of interviewees.
The GES was also advised to scrap the 50 kilometers radius as a condition for payment of transfer grants, since according to GNAT, “every transfer goes with a cost”.
GNAT called on government to make efforts towards payment of living wages and salaries to teachers and other workers of GES.
The Education Service should organize more training sessions for teachers on the new standard-based curriculum to ensure its successful implementation.
The Association also demanded stoppage of GES/SIC compulsory deductions from its members and suggested the deductions ought to be voluntary to ensure industrial harmony and peace.
The National Teachers Council (NTC) was also told to conduct a wider stakeholder engagement on the issues of fee expected to be paid by practicing teachers for their license.
