Koforidua, Dec. 1, GNA - Ms Mary Asantewaa Yirenkyi, aspiring Assembly Member for Social Welfare Electoral Area in the New Juaben South Municipality has urged women to support fellow women contesting the upcoming District level Elections (DLE) to increase women participation.
She said women constituted the larger population in every electoral area and if they decided to support fellow women by voting massively for them, the story of women’s low representation in governance would change.
Ms Yirenkyi has therefore appealed to women in her electoral area to give her the support so that together they could work towards eliminating the various challenges facing women and children in the area.
According to her, campaigning was not easy since it required a lot of financial inputs, a trend she described as a barrier for women participating in local governance adding that if women would appreciate the need to support their own, the financial burden would reduce.
The aspirant, using herself as an example noted that she could not further her education after Junior High School (JHS) due to financial constraints and not because there was no support.
“My motivation in contesting for this position is that things have not changed much, there are many girls who find themselves in my situation and I want to be the people’s representative to speak for such people, even after free SHS, to progress “she added
Already, Ms Yirenkyi said she had been supporting young girls and single parents to be able to educate their children on her own and believes that when given the opportunity to go to the assembly, she could do more.
The aspiring assembly member is a hair dresser and is contesting with two men for the position.
