Kumasi, Dec. 06, GNA – Mrs. Mary Owusu Achaw, Ashanti Regional Director of Education has asked governing boards of senior high schools to work to provide conducive environment for holistic education in schools.
She said the board should not concern itself only in the promotion of academic excellence, but should also help school management to instill discipline and inculcate good moral values in students.
Mrs. Owusu Achaw made the call in an address read for her at the inauguration of a 12-member governing board for the Agric-Nzema Community Day Senior High School in the Kwadaso Municipality.
She said school boards had the responsibility to device innovative strategies that would help promote effective teaching and learning, while at the same time, work to find solutions to infrastructural challenges facing their schools.
They should desist from acts that would have negative impact on schools and support management to instill discipline in both students and teachers.
Mrs. Owusu Achaw commended members of the board for accepting the responsibility to help in the management of the new school and urged students to take their studies seriously to justify the huge investments being made by the government in the free senior high school policy.
Mr Richmond Agyenim Boateng, Kwadaso Municipal Chief Executive, said the government was determined to play facilitating role in the development of the country.
He said education was one of the priorities of the government since it was the fulcrum on which knowledge and skills for national development depended.
Mr Boateng said government would continue to open opportunities for Ghanaian children to have easy and equal access to quality education, no matter their socio-economic background.
He pledged the municipal assembly’s resolve to provide the needed resources to address some of the challenges facing the school.
Mr Daniel Boamah Duku, Headmaster of the school, said the school which was started with 84 students in 2016, now had 1,350 students.
He mentioned inadequate furniture for both the students and teachers, lack of a fence wall, lack of a school bus, lateness and absenteeism by students due to the long distances they walk to the school, as some of the challenges facing the school.
