Accra, Dec. 20, GNA - Mr Kofi Koranteng, a 53-year-old lead campaigner of the advocacy group championing the passage of the Representation of the People’s Amendment Act (ROPAA), has declared his intention to contest the 2020 general election as an independent presidential candidate.
Speaking at a media engagement in Accra, Mr Koranteng said his call was to every well-meaning Ghanaians to join, what he termed "the paradigm revolution" to fulfil the dreams of the 1992 Constitution - to provide a government that worked for: the protection and preservation of Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms, Unity and Stability.
“I am troubled by the pain average Ghanaians go through daily just to make a living irrespective of the choices they have made; it is imperative therefore that with my education, skillset and deep understanding of our problem as a country I put myself in a position that allows me to fix the problem”.
Mr Koranteng described the Constitution of Ghana as a framework for Sovereign rule that was chipped away at its foundation by the corruption, secrecy and exploitation of the people by the ruling leaders of National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said as an independent candidate, his campaign would count on the support of every eligible voter to win against the entrenched forces of the ruling parties.
Mr Koranteng said Ghana as a nation was in the position to become an economic powerhouse that would provide opportunity to citizens enabling them to share in its prosperity.
He said as President he would call on experts in the fields of education, healthcare, agriculture, natural resources, law enforcement, tax policies, and international trade to assist in putting Ghana on a track that lives up to basic principal, to foster equality of opportunity and prosperity.
He said a key ingredient on the road to a more just and prosperous nation was a strong and transparent law enforcement on every level, as such, as part of Agenda 2020, they would expand the resources of the Attorney General to include; forensic accountants.
Mr Koranteng explained that the forensic accountants would be charged with ferreting out corruption within Government Agencies and state-owned organisations.
He said the objective of law enforcement in Ghana must focus on protection, as the root causes of crime are addressed by attacking the drug lords, providing gainful employment and re-invigorating the educational system.
The lead campaigner of ROPAA said he supported free Senior High School (SHS), saying, a strong and vibrant educational system was a foundation in creating economic opportunities.
He said as a rising economic power in Africa, it was essential that there was a highly educated population that would enable Ghana and its companies to compete in the global economy, adding that “I want to re-examine, reorganise and streamline the National Health Insurance Scheme to provide adequate health care for all”.
He also underscored the need to have a government that served the needs of the people with a concise coherent plan to tackle unemployment underemployment.
He said the first step towards brighter employment opportunities was an educational system that was staffed by the best and brightest teachers that could earn a living wage.
Mr Koranteng also noted that the natural resources of Ghana were an important asset to development, adding that “we must have a planned energy policy, where the resources of Ghana that are exported are done in a fair and equitable way for the present and future generations of our citizens”.
On agriculture, he said, Ghana was a net importer of food, and had the capacity and the people, capable of making Ghana a leader in exported agricultural products.
He suggested that by changing the agricultural policies and setting a new course that encouraged sustainable modern farming methods, Ghana could and must become a major food producer.
“At this pivotal time in the history of our country, I want everyone to believe and work towards the goal of expressing your Sovereign Will by firing NDC and NPP and retaking the government for all peoples of our Nation”, he added.
