Yendi (NR) Dec. 20, GNA - The Authorities of the Yendi Senior High have launched the 50th Anniversary celebration of the School.
Launching the anniversary on his behalf, Mr Salifu Sa-eed the Northern Regional Minister said education was the bedrock of development of every country and developed countries prioritized it before getting to their current stages
Mr Sa-eed said educational institutions such as YESS deserved recognition as major contributors to the development of the country.
He said it was important for stakeholders to assign themselves roles in various programmes of the anniversary.
He said government was investing to expand educational infrastructure and their school benefited from two-storey 12 unit classroom building and a single dormitory building and were hoping to add more.
He urged the students to take advantage of the educational opportunities to study hard.
Alhaji Issahaku Alhassan, the Northern Regional Coordinating Director who launched the anniversary on his behalf said the theme: for the launch “Quality Free Senior High School Education for Ghana`s development: the role of YSHS” was relevant.
In speech read on his behalf Mr. Edward Kwaku Azure, Regional Director of Education said records available at the Regional Education Office over 10 years period (2008-2018) indicated that 49.9 percent of students recorded between A1 and C6 in the WASSCE.
He said it improved significantly year by year up to 76.5 percent in 2012 after which it took a nosedive.
Alhaji Mohammed Issah Abah, Deputy Director of Human Resource of the Regional Education office who read the speech on his behaif reminded students to be disciplined to achieve their goals.
Chief Bindana Ayuba Ziblim who represented Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II appealed to the Headmaster and the teachers to work hard to improve on the performance of the school.
He said Ya-Na`s doors were opened to them for consultation
In his welcome address chief Alhassan Mustak Husein, Headmaster of the school said the school had 121 teachers, three NABCO and seven National Service Persons with 60 non-teaching staff.
In his closing remarks, Alhaji Mohammed Haroon former Regional Director of Education who chaired the occasion called on the old students, Parent Association to support the school with teaching materials to improve on teaching and learning.
He urged the old Students with various positions in the country to lobby for projects for the school.
The school was established in September, 1970, initially as a Middle Boarding school meant to open access to basic education in the Eastern Corridor of the Northern Territories.
It later morphed into Yendi Secondary school in September, 1970 to give access to secondary education to the teeming youth who completed basic school and were interested in secondary education.
It started with an initial student population of 70 all male students and seven seven females in the next academic year.
This number steadily increased as the years rolled by and now the school has a total student population of 2,724.
The school is a boarding school with few as day students.
The first Headmaster of the school was late Mr. Cletus Bernard Teviu from 1970 to 1979, the second Headmaster was late Mr. Abu Imoro from 1979 to 1982 and present Headmaster is Chief Alhassan Mustak Husein who is the tenth Headmaster from 2016 to date.
