Koforidua, Dec. 26, GNA – Most Reverend Joseph Afrifa-Agyekum, the Catholic Bishop of the Koforidua Diocese, has called on Ghanaians to respect the solemnity of Christmas as it is symbolic of the time when Jesus Christ came to demonstrate his love to humanity.
He expressed regret that many people have reduced the celebration of Christmas to eating and drinking and engaging in activities which does not conform to the Christian faith.
Bishop Afrifa-Agyekum said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after the Christmas Church Service at the St George’s Catholic Cathedral at Koforidua.
He said gradually people are allowing the social and entertainment aspect of the celebration to overshadow the spiritual significance of Christmas.
Bishop Afrifa-Agyekum said this is the time for Christians to cleanse themselves and let the birth of Christ reflect in their lives to bring positive changes in them.
He used the opportunity to wish the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, the Vice President, Dr Mahamud Bawumia, the entire cabinet, all religious leaders and Ghanaians a Merry Christmas.
He said it is his prayer that the country will continue to enjoy peace and called on all continue to pray for peace for the country.
