Black Stars Coach Kwesi Appiah has hailed the performance of center back pairing of Rashid Sumaila and Nicholas Opoku in the international friendly against Japan on Wednesday.
The two combined perfectly to mute the threats of Japanese stars Honda and Shinji Kagawa upfront. Nicholas Opoku and Rashid Sumaila played with some steel at the back and had an understanding between them.
Ghana won the game 2-0 and Coach Kwesi Appiah pointed out the solid defensive performance of the duo will be important for the Black Stars.
“Nicolas (Opoku) is a young player. He joined the Black Stars team last year and he has been doing so well," he told 442gh.com
“Now it’s all about confidence and his confidence level is rising. Any team that can perform well always depend on your defenders.'
“Nicholas together with Rashid Sumaila did very well. Once their confidence levels are high and then they are able to put the ball down and pass and not just kick the ball then we can always have a good game,” he said.
He added, “It’s good for Ghana. We need to get more players. We don’t have to rely on some few players.”
Sumaila saw 77 minutes of action with Nicholas Opoku playing the entire duration.
