In Wednesday's encounter, the Super Falcons will have to dig deep to overcome a confident Shepolopolo side who recorded an emphatic 5-0 win against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game.
Eight-time African champions Nigeria lie third on the Group B log behind the Zambians who top the log on superior goal difference ahead of South Africa.
Against South Africa, it was perhaps complacency that was Nigeria’s undoing as they looked over-confident on the ball, given that they had always beaten the Banyana Banyana.
Ordinarily, Wednesday's Group B game would not be a bother for the defending champions, having previously hammered the Zambians 6-0 in their Group A clash at the 2014 tournament.
However, the Zambians, making only their second appearance in this tournament, have seen some remarkable improvement and thus cannot be taken for granted. They will be out to prove that their emphatic win against Equatorial Guinea was no fluke.
Nigeria star striker, Asisat Oshoala and her teammates know the challenge ahead and have indicated that they are going for broke, as that will be the only way to revive their campaign for a record ninth title.
“We have no choice than to work hard and win at all cost against Zambia as that is the only way we can revive our campaign. Against South Africa, we thought it was going to be the toughest game but with the performance from Zambia, and our bad start, it is going to be very tough, but we are confident we will prevail,” said a confident Oshoala, the African Player of the Year 2017, in an interview.
Later on Wednesday evening, South Africa will seek to continue from where they left off in the opening game as they face Equatorial Guinea. Read Full Story
