The six-day tournament started on Monday and ends on Saturday, September 14.
The 18-year-old player made it to the semis after dispatching Indian and tournament’s number one seed Aaryan Zaveri 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
Reginald, the tournament’s number 11 seed, has been in top form at the competition recording a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Benin’s Aristide Setome and 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Abayomi Oluseyi Philips from Nigeria at the preliminary stages before meeting Aaryan Zaveri in the quarter finals.
He will now face Myko Yohan Kouame of Cote d’Ivoire, who qualified to the semi-final after beating Nigeria’s Emmanuel Jebutu 6-3, 6-3.
n the girls’ singles, Ghana’s Naa Anyema McKorley won her first match 6-4, 6-4 against Peace Udoh from Nigeria but she was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by USA’s Ariel Johnson in the second round.
Ghana presented eight players at the competition but only Reginald Okantey made it to the semi-final.
Meanwhile, the Tennis Foundation Ghana, a promoter of tennis in Ghana, has pledged to continue to support and encourage Ghanaian players in their quest to make the proud.
Mr Roger Crawford, president of the TFG told this paper that his outfit will go the extra mile to turn the fortunes of the sport around in the shortest time possible.
“At least one of the players (Reginald Okantey) made it to the semis and that is soothing. As an NGO we will continue to support the Ghana Tennis Federation, especially the players to enable them go far in such tournaments,” Mr Crawford told Graphic Sports Online from his US base. Read Full Story
