From Inusa Musah, Tema.
Dr. Godwin Agboka, an Associate Professor at the University of Houston-Downtown, United States of America, has advocated mentorship and career development programmes for the students of Chemu Senior High School (SHS), Tema.
Dr. Agboka is a former student of the Tema second-cycle institution, and, in his view, as an academician, mentoring and teacher motivation are key to effective teaching and learning.
In this regard, he entreated the teachers of his former school to device innovative ways of teaching to facilitate learning.
Dr. Godwin Agboka appreciated the relentless efforts the teachers and all stakeholders of Chemu SHS have been putting in to ensure that the school continued to be the best in the Harbour City.
Dr. Godwin Agboka said these at Chemu SHS, where he donated a range of books on Literature, Government, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Geography, Physics and Biology, valued at US$2,000, through the ASIK Foundation.
The books were to enhance teaching and learning, and to also increase the stock of books in the school’s library.
He expressed happiness about the academic performance of the school, and promised to institutionalise an annual scholarship scheme for the needy but brilliant students, to promote competition among the students.
In the light of this, Dr. Agboka said he shared in his alma mater’s vision of maintaining its grade A standard, which, he explained, could be upheld, provided all stakeholders come together to execute the Chemu vision.
To this end, he urged the students to make good use of the books to help impact their academic performance positively, whilst he entreated the authorities to ensure proper maintenance of the books to promote their lifespans.
Dawn Tetteh, School Prefect, received the donations on behalf of the school, and thanked Dr. Godwin Agboka for his gesture.
He went on to entreat all past students of Chemu SHS to emulate the gesture of Dr. Agboka, as he requested more support, especially in the area of infrastructure development, saying that the school had some abandoned projects.
He believed that this would create a more conducive learning environment for the students, and go a long way to improve their academic performance.
A similar donation was done at Aggrey Road Cluster of Schools, Community 2, Tema, at an estimated cost of US$1,500.
